Lewis & Clark Celebrates Exemplary Alumni
The College recognized three alumni for outstanding achievements and community service at the Alumni Honors Banquet on October 3. Serving on the selection committee were Patti Baumann ’81, Steve Haldors ’58, Pat Hibbard ’52, and Jim Stell ’60.

Donald G. Balmer Citation (for outstanding volunteer service to the College)
Lloyd Babler Jr. ’57 is president and chair of Babler Brothers, a highway construction and paving firm with several subsidiaries. Babler served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and is a former member of the Port of Portland Board of Commissioners. His philanthropic work includes the Portland Art Museum and Court Appointed Special Advocates. Babler, a trustee of Lewis & Clark from 1993 to 2002, is now a life trustee.
Outstanding Young Alumnus Award
Bal Krishna Joshi ’95 is the founder of Thamel.com, an employee-owned company and Web site that enables expatriate Nepali to purchase gifts and arrange for their delivery within Nepal. Named for the kathmandu street that is a hub for local commerce, Thamel.com features an integrated Nepalese language platform, news stories, and a secure currency transfer service. Through Thamel.com, Joshi helps sustain the ties of far-flung friends and family and enriches the economy of his native country.
Distinguished Alumna Award
Jane T. Nishida ’77 was responsible for all aspects of environmental protection, including air pollution and emergency response, as secretary of the environment for the state of Maryland from 1995 to 2002. She has served on the boards of numerous state, national, and international environmental organizations. Nishida now works for PADCO, an international consulting company headquartered in Washington, D.C., that advises countries on environmental issues and provides development solutions for the 21st century.
