This month, Andrea Dooley joined the Lewis & Clark community as the new associate vice president of finance/controller. Get to know Andrea in the interview below:
Can you share a bit about your background?
I’ve lived in Portland since I was six so I consider myself an honorary native. I came to Lewis & Clark from a local security software company called Tripwire where I was the Corporate Controller. Prior to Tripwire, I was an auditor with KPMG, a tax and advisory services firm. My husband Ryan and I have two dogs, an English Bulldog named Gatsby and a Boxer named Daisy, who we focus on spoiling.
How did you first learn about Lewis & Clark?
I first learned about Lewis & Clark as a high school student. I applied and considered attending but ultimately ended up at the University of Portland. I have always had great respect and admiration for the mission of the college and am so excited that this opportunity came about at the perfect time in my career as I considered making a transition.
What is your role as controller?
As controller I’m responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the college’s financial statements for purposes of the annual audit, as well as for internal reporting needs. I am also responsible for the bookstore, student accounts, mail room, and print shop.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
I look forward to partnering with other departments and understanding how we can better facilitate their needs. I have found the most rewarding aspect of my job is finding ways to provide information or support that can drive strategic decision-making in an organization. I also get great satisfaction at the completion of a clean audit!
What did you want to be when growing up?
As a kid I wanted to be a marine biologist. Mainly I envisioned myself swimming around with sea turtles and dolphins—so not exactly a realistic vision of the job opportunities. At some point my practical side won out and I switched my focus to accounting and the equally exciting visions of Excel spreadsheets.
What kinds of hobbies and interests do you have outside of work?
Cooking, running, hiking, wine tasting, and travel are how we spend our time away from work. I’m currently training for my fourth marathon. If you see me hobbling around campus, it’s highly likely my most recent long run got the best of me.
What’s on your bucket list?
My ultimate bucket list dream is to complete an Iron Man triathlon. It’s possible the easy access to a pool at Lewis & Clark may be the motivation I need to get going on that goal.
