International Affairs: Global Divergence

In April, Lewis & Clark hosted its 54th International Affairs Symposium, titled Global Divergence: Challenging Dominant Perspectives of an Interconnected World.

Student cochairs Masha Egorenko and Matthew WongThe symposium’s sessions—all with two opposing speakers—focused on topics such as the social implications of the World Wide Web, the next steps in combating ISIS, international policies in an age of migration, and evaluating the concept of global citizenship.

The list of speakers included world-renowned national security scholars Max Boot, the Jeane J. Kirkpatrick Senior Fellow in National Security Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, and David Ignatius, an associate editor and weekly columnist for the Washington Post.

Masha Egorenko CAS ’17 and Matthew Wong CAS ’16 served as student cochairs of the event.

Gender Studies: Game On!

The 35th annual Gender Studies Symposium, held in March, focused on the concepts of fun and play in relation to gender and sexuality.

Speakers included Lisa Nakamura, cofacilitator of the website FemTechNet, a network of feminist scholars who teach courses on feminism and technology and research gender and politics in online spaces; David Leonard, who writes about issues of race, gender, inequality, and the criminal justice system; and D’Lo, a queer/transgender Tamil-Sri Lankan-American interdisciplinary artist.

The symposium’s student cochairs were Hannah Daniels CAS ’16, Anya Hall CAS ’16, Alexa Jakusovszky CAS ’16, and Em Schuler CAS ’16.
