
James Welty, a former assistant professor of music and organ instructor at Lewis & Clark from 1959–67 and again from 1969–72, died December 2, 2017. An extraordinary musician, he was organist and choirmaster at First Presbyterian Church in Portland for 37 years. Through his music ministry, Welty served several generations in the congregation.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Norma Welty BS ’51; sons Jeffrey and Paul; daughter Diane, and four grandchildren.
