Lloyd Babler Jr. BS ’57, life trustee of the college, died December 20, 2018. He served as a Lewis & Clark trustee from 1993 to 2002.
At the age of 12, he began working for Babler Brothers, an asphalt paving and grading company started by his father and uncle in 1929. He went on to work in capacities from laborer and equipment operator to president, CEO, and owner, often boasting, “I’ve got asphalt in my veins.”
A proud patriot, he served in the United States Navy during the Korean War, spending 42 months at sea aboard the USS New Jersey, America’s most decorated battleship, and earned seven service awards and commendations.
Graduating from Lewis & Clark with a degree in business and administrative studies, Babler later cofounded Western International Investors and Developers, which eventually owned and operated 18 companies. In 2003, Lewis & Clark honored him with its Donald G. Balmer Citation for outstanding voluntary service to the college.
In 1954, Babler married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Fry. She survives him, as do three of their children, including Megan Babler Canton BS ’93; three grandchildren; and a sister.
