Books for Juneteenth
Watzek has a new display in recognition of Juneteenth. These books may be borrowed!
Open gallery
June 19, also known as Freedom Day or Jubilee Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the anniversary of the arrival of Union soldiers in Galveston, Texas in 1865 with the news that the Civil War had ended and slaves were emancipated.
Juneteenth has been celebrated ever since, and became recognized as a federal holiday in 2021. This selection of books, on display in the library atrium, encourages readers to reflect on the enduring impact of slavery as well as the resiliency and achievements of Black Americans. All titles are available to borrow.
