Research Start-Up Grants Help Support New Science Faculty

Lewis & Clark received three “Research Start-Up” grants from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, based in Vancouver, Washington. These grants of $36,000 each will allow Lewis & Clark to provide additional funding to the start-up packages offered to new tenure-track faculty in the biology, chemistry, and physics departments.

While all new faculty receive start-up packages to launch their teaching and research careers, science faculty often have more extensive needs because their research requires equipment, supplies, and, in some cases, laboratory modifications.

The Murdock grants will allow Lewis & Clark to extend competitive offers to promising junior scientists who are eager to join the faculty and, at the same time, provide L&C students with the opportunity to work alongside skilled researchers who can provide them with mentorship as they launch their own careers.
