Ensuring Campus Safety through Hazardous Tree Removal
In collaboration with our campus arborist and city officials, we’re taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of our community this winter.

After a thorough assessment by our campus arborist and with the city’s approval, several trees around campus have been identified as potential hazards due to major structural flaws and risk of the tree or large limbs falling , particularly with the harsh winter season ahead. City permits have been issued, and beginning on November 19, community members will notice the tree removal vendor, Rich’s Tree Service, working on campus. Locations for these tree removals include the front of Pamplin, behind Howard Residence Hall, and behind the Facilities building.
Please be aware that tree removal may be noisy and could require blocking off certain parking spaces to provide workers with the necessary space to work safely and effectively. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time.
As part of our commitment to sustainability and stewardship, we will also be adding seven new trees to campus. This work aligns with our long-term approach to maintaining a healthy campus landscape, and we are proud that our campus remains over 60% tree canopy—double the requirement set by the city. L&C Facilities pledges to steward our campus landscapes in ways that embrace natural forest dynamics and support the long-term health of the people, plants, and animals that together depend on the richness and beauty of this place.
Thank you for your understanding as we complete this essential work to safeguard our community and structures. This coordinated effort reflects our commitment to a safe, resilient, and vibrant campus environment.
