A Rare Look at Medieval Manuscripts Early this spring, Watzek Library hosted Shaping the Soul: Books in Medieval Life, the first public display of medieval manuscripts in Portland in nearly 30 years The exhibition brought together more than 30 rare manuscripts from the 13th through 16th centuries, offering visitors an unusual opportunity to engage up close with the past. Professor of English Karen Gross and Alli Sanders BA ’26 co-curated the exhibition, with assistance from Hannah Crummé, head of special collections and college archives.
Two faculty members have received endowed professorships for their outstanding teaching and scholarship. Lina Darwich is now the Mary Stuart Rogers Professor of Education at the graduate school, and Katherine FitzGibbon is the James W. Rogers Professor of Music at the undergraduate college.
Keeping Score
Erica Lyman, professor of law and director of L&C’s Global Law Alliance for Animals and the Environment, worked with international partners to launch the Food Systems NDC Scorecard. It’s a tool designed to assess how countries integrate food systems into their national climate strategies, an often overlooked area of planning.
Moss Appeal
L&C’s annual Moss Appreciation Week stepped into the national spotlight on April 5 with a feature titled “The Beauty of Moss” on CBS News Sunday Morning. The story explored moss as an ancient, resilient life form—one that has survived for more than 450 million years—and prominently featured L&C’s scenic campus along with key members of its moss-loving community.
Spider Prize
Greta Binford, professor of biology, has received the 2025 Lynwood W. Swanson Scientific Research Award from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust. The honor recognizes her nationally respected research on spider biodiversity and venom evolution, much of it conducted with undergraduate researchers.

Teaming Up With Nike
A new partnership between Nike and the law school’s Small Business Legal Clinic pairs Nike’s in-house attorneys with law student interns working on real-life client matters. The collaboration, an initiative of the Center for Business Law and Leadership, expands practical training while helping small businesses and nonprofits across Oregon access legal support.
In Harmony
Lewis & Clark welcomed the Albina Music Trust to campus for a celebration of Portland’s Black musical heritage. Organized by Watzek Library, the event included a panel discussion and a two-day sound installation in the EAR Forest, connecting students to the cultural legacy of the Albina neighborhood.
