UWC attended: United World College Costa Rica

Hello hello! I’m Gabriela Madrazo, from Toluca, Estado de México, and I graduated from UWC Costa Rica in May 2025. My experience there was truly transformative. Recently, I reflected with my school’s leadership team on how different my life would be if I had never attended UWC, and I realized just how much it has shaped me. It was one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever faced. I arrived not knowing what the IB was—and without speaking English! Studying such a demanding program in a new language was difficult, but incredibly rewarding. I’m now proud to say I earned my IB Diploma and formed deep connections with people from over 70 nationalities. Along the way, I also built some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—ones I know will last for years to come.

Lewis & Clark stood out to me because of its strong, flexible academic program and its wide range of opportunities inside and outside the classroom. The beautiful campus reminded me of Costa Rica—surrounded by nature but with easy access to the city. After speaking with current students, I felt confident it was a welcoming environment where I could continue learning and growing.

I plan to major in International Affairs, and I’m considering minors like Political Science or Health Studies. I’m passionate about social impact and would love to work for an NGO. My volunteer experiences have taught me a lot and shown me how meaningful it is to contribute to positive change. I’m also very interested in politics; I’ve participated in Model United Nations for over eight years, which has deepened my interest in diplomacy and global cooperation.

Outside the classroom, I love to laugh, connect with others, and enjoy the little things. I’m a big fan of chess (though it’s been a while!), outdoor walks, and hiking. I also enjoy volunteering whenever I can. One day, I’d love to properly learn how to play the piano; for now, I’ve learned a few songs through YouTube—no technique, just enthusiasm! Living in Costa Rica allowed me to explore a new country and experience many cultures through my peers. Even without traveling much, the diversity on campus was a global experience in itself.

I’m excited to begin this new chapter at Lewis & Clark and grow academically, personally, and socially. I hope to learn from my peers, explore new interests, and give back to my new community. Most of all, I hope to be an active and positive part of my new community—just as so many people have positively impacted me over the past few years.
