Acceptable Use Policy

Lewis & Clark College provides technology resources to support teaching, learning, research, and administrative functions. These resources include software, hardware, and staff expertise. This policy applies to all users of College technology, whether using College-owned or personal equipment connected to the College network.

Key Principles

  1. Primary Use: Technology resources are primarily for educational and administrative purposes.
  2. Shared Resources: Users should be considerate of others when using shared resources.
  3. Prohibited Activities: Users must not engage in illegal, disruptive, or harmful activities.
  4. Identification: All network users must provide identity information for security purposes.
  5. Privacy: Users should not expect privacy when using College technology resources.

Prohibited Activities Include:

  • Violating laws or College policies
  • Obstructing others’ use of resources
  • Compromising privacy or harassing others
  • Unauthorized access or impersonation
  • Creating or distributing malicious software
  • Excessive personal use
  • Using resources for personal gain
  • Publishing inappropriate content under the lclark.edu domain
  • Disrupting network operations
  • Installing unauthorized network equipment

Identification

Users must authenticate their identity when accessing College networks and services. Guest access requires basic contact information. Regular users must comply with information security standards and not share accounts.

Privacy and Monitoring

College technology resources, including email, are provided for the purpose of College-related activities. Files and communications using College technology are not private. They may be subject to legal processes, subpoenas, monitoring, investigations or audits. Although IT staff will generally treat encountered information as confidential, they will take appropriate action, based upon the nature of the circumstances, upon encountering activities that appear to be illegal, dangerous, or contrary to College policies.

Consequences

Violations may result in immediate loss of access privileges. Serious violations may lead to suspension, dismissal, or legal action.

Policy Updates

This policy may be updated periodically. Users are responsible for staying informed of current policies.

Reporting Violations

Report suspected violations to the Chief Information Officer at cio@lclark.edu.
