Mary Szybist, associate professor of English, is the recipient of a 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship in the category of creative arts. Szybist’s fellowship will be devoted to work on her next volume of poetry, a follow-up to her award-winning collection Incarnadine.

In November, Szybist received the 2013 National Book Award for Poetry, exactly 50 years after William Stafford, who also taught at the college, won the same honor for Traveling Through the Dark. Szybist also received the 2014 Oregon Book Award for Poetry.

“I am sure I speak for everyone at Lewis & Clark when I say we are tremendously proud of Mary, and proud to count her as a member of our community,” President Barry Glassner said. “We have known for many years that Mary is a brilliant poet and teacher. It’s exciting and gratifying to see her receiving this well-deserved national recognition.”

In 2014, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation awarded 177 fellowships to a diverse group of scholars, artists, and scientists. Appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise, the successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants.
