The L&C Advantage

Lewis & Clark’s advantage is the power of our three schools: the undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences, the Law School, and the Graduate School of Education and Counseling.

Our liberal arts and sciences foundation and two top-notch professional schools, located in a vibrant, West Coast city, offer an academically rigorous education in a supportive environment with experiential learning as a core feature. We deliver learning that goes beyond four walls, fostering career-readiness and the durable skills that support our students’ professional and personal pursuits and provide benefits to the communities we partner with and serve.

Lewis & Clark is ushering in the next phase of liberal arts and professional education. We are building on our rigorous academic foundation to offer unparalleled experiential learning opportunities, a vital launchpad for the next generation of leaders.

Three Strategic Imperatives for Lewis & Clark’s Future

The L&C Advantage is guided by three long-term imperatives.

Imperative 1: Develop Leaders

We must invest in programs that develop leaders to address global challenges. We will create a new, cross-college center for environmental solutions, infuse the curriculum and campus culture with practices that promote constructive dialogue, and enhance opportunities for advocacy across the three schools.

Imperative 2: Enhance Regional Impact

We must scale our impact in Portland and the region, while increasing learning opportunities. We will forge new community partnerships, formalize and expand the footprint of existing ones, and engage as a reciprocal community partner to amplify the impact of our collaborative relationships. We will endeavor to expand our physical presence in central Portland and establish a more accessible hub for many of our community-based initiatives.

Imperative 3: Fuel Lifelong Success

We must maximize the return on investment of a Lewis & Clark education and prepare students for economic opportunities and purposeful lives of consequence. We will make sure every student in all three schools has regular exposure and access to structured, substantial, and immersive experiential learning opportunities that foster career-applicable skills. We will reimagine our approach to undergraduate career preparation by adding in-demand majors, minors, concentrations, and certifications. In all three schools we will consider new programs driven by our institutional strengths and the needs of students and employers.

Activating Our Strategy

To bring our three strategic imperatives to life, we are advancing five institutional priorities that expand learning opportunities, strengthen partnerships, and prepare students for meaningful careers.

1. Powering Environmental Innovation for a Sustainable World

Connecting with nature and communities across boundaries is a cornerstone of Lewis & Clark's environmental studies program. The Environmental Innovation Center, led by Gregg Macey, leverages our institutional strengths in climate, health, and community.

The center’s signature initiative, the Environmental Innovation Lab, will develop future climate leaders by offering students opportunities to work with community partners to address complex, real world challenges.

2. Accelerating Careers

Composition with group of multiracial employees, managers or office workers moving boxes to assemble towers. The L&C Career Accelerator embeds career preparation into the institution’s DNA.

All Lewis & Clark students will gain the confidence, adaptability and professional experience needed to thrive in a complex, changing world. Providing paid internship opportunities is a top priority.

3. Advancing the Future of Liberal Arts Education

Walk to class vibes We are building on our academically rigorous foundation by adding programs that reflect new and emerging technologies and innovations.

We recently approved a new data science major, grounded in computational skills with a focus on ethical reasoning and societal context. Other areas like artificial intelligence are also ripe for curricular innovation and development.

4. Strengthening Professional Pathways

Lewis & Clark Law School We are strengthening the pathways between the undergraduate college and our top-tier professional schools in education, counseling, and law.

Seamless academic pathways—plus proposed new minors in education and law and policy—will better prepare students for post-graduate opportunities.

5. Partnering With the Community

Winta Yohannes, executive director of Albina Vision Trust, speaking at the partnership event at Lewis & Clark. We aim to make our Portland location a living laboratory by building and strengthening reciprocal partnerships with community organizations, industry, schools and nonprofits.

Core initiatives, like an historic partnership with Albina Vision Trust to build a hub for education and economic opportunity in Portland’s redeveloped Lower Albina district, are connecting our students to the city and helping to revitalize our region.

$1.5 Million Grant Funds Public Humanities Initiative With Albina Vision Trust
