Belonging Resource: Reconnecting with Belonging at Year’s End

As the calendar year winds down, campuses often shift into a slower rhythm to wrap up projects, close out grades, and prepare for the next cycle. This moment of pause also offers a great opportunity for us to reimagine and reconnect to this work of belonging.

In a blog from the University of Alabama’s “Student Belonging in the Classroom,”  educators explore how belonging is cultivated in everyday academic spaces, not just through programs or grand initiatives. The authors note strategies outlining methods faculty and staff can consider in building academic spaces where students and colleagues feel seen, valued, and connected, engagement naturally deepens. They also provide ideas and strategies for intentional efforts campuses can take to increase belonging.

Some questions you or your campus team might reflect on and build from after reviewing this resource include:
  • What belonging moments stand out from this semester?
  • How might academic belonging affect student achievement?
  • How might campus leadership support faculty/academic supports’ contribution to students’ senses of belonging?
As we look ahead to 2026, let’s carry forward the small, meaningful practices that help our communities feel connected and cared for.
This resource is a feature for campus members of the College of Independent College’s Belonging Network.
