Diagnostic Testing
While Lewis & Clark College DOES NOT provide diagnostic testing services, we wanted to provide you with some basic information.
Assessment for Autism, ADHD, or Learning Disabilities: What You Need to Know
Types of Assessments
- Neurodevelopmental Assessment: Evaluates for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
- Psychoeducational/Comprehensive Learning Disorder Assessment: Identifies learning disabilities like dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia.
- Psychological Assessment: Aids in diagnosing mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorders.
- Full Neuropsychological Assessment: Encompasses all the above components.
Assessment Providers
Clinical psychologists are often the primary assessors for ASD, ADHD, learning disabilities, and mental health conditions. There are providers and clinics throughout the Portland metro area.
Assessment Process
Testing involves an intake session, testing sessions, and a feedback session where findings, diagnosis, and recommendations are discussed. Collateral information like educational records and interviews with acquaintances might be required.
Insurance and Cost
Insurance may cover a percentage of ADHD and ASD assessments if deemed “medically necessary,” usually by referral from a qualified medical or mental health provider. Insurance will not cover costs for learning disability testing. Rates often average $250/hour, for a three to five hour testing process, not including the report writing and review. Total costs can average around $2,000-$3,000. Universities like George Fox University and Pacific University offer full neuropsychological assessments at lower prices. Pacific University also offers ADHD specific assessments for as little as $350. Please contact these organizations for their current rates.
In Summary
Insurance may cover some costs for ASD and ADHD assessments if deemed medically necessary, but never cover learning disability assessments. Assessments can average around $2,000- $3,000. Lower cost options are available at two Oregon university clinics. Reflecting on the reasons for seeking assessment and how the results may impact you may be helpful in deciding whether or not to move forward with the testing process.
