Supporting our community in a time of uncertainty
Dear L&C Community,
There have been a number of very alarming reports from around the country related to higher education, including cuts to research funding, threats to free speech and academic freedom, as well as the revocation of international student visas. Many in our community are feeling concerned either for themselves or their peers, as well as troubled over the targeting of higher education more generally.
I share your concerns. I am in close contact with a network of higher education leaders who share them as well and who are advocating on behalf of the values we hold dear. It is more important than ever to reaffirm our commitment to academic freedom and an inclusive campus. The leadership team and I remain committed to our core values and to supporting every member of our community.
While we have had few direct impacts, I am saddened to report that we have had some federal research funding cancelled. And, of course, feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and even fear for ourselves and others, can be felt across our institution.
It is important to acknowledge that while it is a profoundly destabilizing and uncertain time for many, some members of our community are more vulnerable than others. Our Office of International Students and Scholars (ISS) is in regular contact with international students. With the support of ISS, a number of international students remained on campus over spring break rather than take the risk of being unable to return. To the best of our knowledge, none of our community members have had a specific issue with their visas. ISS will continue to monitor the situation and remain in touch with those who may be impacted. We have developed guidance for the community on how to respond if immigration enforcement appears on campus.
I have asked my leadership team to develop a plan for supporting our international students, staff, and faculty. This includes housing and employing students over the summer if there is a need. The Office of Advancement is developing a fundraising campaign aimed at alumni who may want to support this effort.
If you are an international student with concerns, I encourage you to connect with the Office of International Students and Scholars. If you are an international staff or faculty member with concerns, please reach out to your supervisor or respective dean.
Working together, I’m confident that we can continue to embody and sustain a community of care with meaningful action. Offices, departments, groups, and individuals may be contacted about assisting with support efforts. While I may not always be able to share all that we are doing to support a particular group, especially when privacy and safety are key, please know that our community members’ well-being and protection are at the forefront of my thoughts and at the center of my daily work.
I welcome your ongoing engagement as we navigate these challenging times.
Sincerely,
Robin H. Holmes-Sullivan
