Update on possible deployment of federal forces in Portland

September 28, 2025

Dear L&C community,

I am writing to acknowledge the news reports about the possible deployment of federal forces in Portland over the last few days. While few details are known about this still-evolving set of circumstances, I wanted you to know that the Lewis & Clark leadership team and I are monitoring this situation very closely.

What we do know is that Portland is a vibrant and caring city with abundant natural beauty and inspiring opportunities to innovate and create a better future for all. It is a city that, like most other cities, has its challenges, but strives to be a safe and welcoming place to live, work, and go to school. Both Oregon’s governor and Portland’s mayor have spoken out in recent days, strongly asserting that protests have been peaceful and lawful, emphasizing that there is no need for federal assistance.

We do not anticipate any direct impacts to our campus. Still, these developments may understandably raise questions and concerns.

I want you to know that the safety and well-being of the L&C community is my highest priority. I recognize that these reports may impact members of our community in a variety of ways. The following resources are available for students, faculty, and staff:

If you see anything that concerns you related to your individual safety or the safety of our community, please do not hesitate to contact Campus Safety at 503-768-7777 or via email: safety@lclark.edu.

During this challenging time, I encourage our community to stay true to our values, to speak and listen across differences and, most of all, remain focused on staying safe and looking out for one another.

Sincerely,

Robin H. Holmes-Sullivan

President
