Student Leadership
Interested in Helping Lead College Outdoors Trips? Follow these steps!
You bring the enthusiasm, and we’ll train you on the outdoor skills. We train on the specifics needed for leading with College Outdoors at L&C, as well as general outdoor and leadership skills.
We run multiple trips almost every weekend of the semester, as well as trips during Fall and Spring Breaks! Most of our programs are run by student staff, all of whom started out as volunteers for the program and worked their way along our Leadership Trail. Undergrad students, graduate students, and law students are all able to become leaders for College Outdoors trips, and you do not need to be involved in leadership to be a participant (though we’d love to have you!)
Our leadership teams are composed of Student Coordinators (SCs), Assistant Leaders (ALs), and Trip Leaders (TLs) who actively engage in a feedback dialogue in order to set goals, build strengths, improve trips, and develop skills in outdoor leadership.
The Leadership Trail is our systematic way to foster and evaluate the growth of leaders in our outdoor education setting. Each role has specific requirements, responsibilities, and benefits. You don’t need any previous outdoor experience to trek the Leadership Trail, since College Outdoors provides training along the way. Learn more about the Leadership Trail here!
For all who are interested in being a leader
- Learn about the Leadership Trail & the 10+1 Skills for Outdoor Leaders and commit to the CO Community Contract.
- Submit a Trip Preference Form (Fall 2026 is not live yet!). All new/aspiring and returning leaders must submit a trip preference form each semester. This form lets us know you want to be staffed on a trip!
- Take advantage of Leader Training opportunities
- Fall Semester FREE weeknight clinics, Open House
- Spring Semester PE/A 142: Wilderness Leadership Course for credit
For aspiring Student Coordinators
- Attend 3 College Outdoors events! These can be a combination of attending an NST or a weekend trip as a participant, or coming to an Open House. (Climbing shuttle does not count as an event).
For aspiring Assistant Leaders (but can be done earlier!)
- Apply for Driver Clearance. Once L&C runs your driver history check, you will be emailed a link to an online driver training program.
- After you complete all the online modules, email kori@lclark.edu to set up a time for an on-the-road session in our vans.
- Complete the College Outdoors Written Driving Exam.
- For prospective Assistant Leaders, complete the AL Policy Quiz with 100% accuracy! (Don’t worry, it’s open book!)
